Benton County Board of Supervisors Minutes, Feb. 4, 2015

February 4, 2015   The Benton County Board of Supervisors met in regular session with Supervisors Frese, Hertle and Wiley present. The meeting was called to order at 1:00 p.m. The board continued working on the county’s FY16 budget. The auditor provided budget documents reflecting changes made at the direction of the board for their review.

The meeting was called to order at 9:00 a.m. Moved by Wiley, seconded by Hertle, to approve the minutes of February 3, 2015 and February 4, 2015. All members voting aye thereon.

Benton SWCD to meet February 24

The next regular meeting of the Benton Soil & Water Conservation District Commissioners is scheduled for Tuesday, February 24, 2015. The Commissioners will meet at 8:00 a.m. at the District office in Vinton. Items on the agenda include minutes from previous meetings, financial reports, conservation plans,  Federal and State cost share programs, Watershed Project activities, selection of Conservation District of Iowa Scholarship applications and other general business.

In the Statehouse: Fuel tax increase vote facing Iowa Legislature

After being gone for two weeks and in the first week there was a snowstorm, I was dreading getting home at 9 p.m. and having to clear out the drive to get my car in. You can imagine how surprised I was to see my neighbor, Don Miller, had plowed me out, cleaned my sidewalks off and cleared a way to the back door on the deck. Now that was a great Valentine! Thank you, Don! It's amazing to have good neighbors.

REAP Day at the Capitol

Each year, organizations and individuals from across the state come together at the Iowa State Capitol to speak with legislators about the importance of protecting Iowa’s natural resources at Environmental Lobby Day/REAP Day at the Capitol.   This year, the event takes place Tuesday, Feb. 17. Speaking face-to-face with legislators and showing that there is a broad base of support for a healthy environment is one of the most important ways to help advance programs and policies that protect Iowa’s air, water and land.

Benton Co. Democratic Central Committee to meet Feb. 17

The regular meeting of the Benton County Democratic Central Committee will  be held on Tuesday, February 17, 2015 at the Norway Public Library at 108  Railroad St E in Norway at 7:00 pm. Anyone interested in working with the  Democrats is invited to attend this planning meeting for the future of the  Benton County Democrats and our support of the candidates for the up coming  elections.

Benton County Sheriff's Office January report/arrest log

Benton County Sheriff Randall Forsyth reports that deputies answered 288 calls for service and investigated 40 accidents. Deputies attempted to serve 86 civil papers and issued 31 traffic citations and 53 traffic warnings. There were 24 arrests/juvenile referrals with 25 charges being filed in January 2015. (5) were felony charges, (9) were simple misdemeanors, and (11) were indictable misdemeanors.

In the Statehouse: Legislators discussing money in many ways

The weatherman was right this time.  We are buried in the heavy, perfect snowman making snow here in Des Moines.  It is beautiful and a back breaker!  Aren’t you thankful for our Snow Warriors who clear it all up for us? What’s happening in the statehouse?  Some of us are looking to get money back into your wallet and some of us are wanting to take some more out.
