Vinton Garden Club News 1/27/16

The Vinton Garden Club member of National Garden Clubs, Inc., District II, and Central Region met at 12:30 pm at Luanna Hawkins home for the January meeting. The program was “Benton-Tama Water Quality Project” given by Shannon Mitchel, Water Shed Coordinator. President Fran Stueck called the meeting to order at 12:45pm. Meeting was stopped to hear Shannon speak then at 2:15 the meeting resumed.

Vinton woman wins $100,000 from Iowa Lottery

A Benton County woman may be getting a newer pickup truck after claiming a $100,000 prize from an Iowa Lottery scratch game. Barbara Osterkamp of Vinton won her big prize on a “Vegas Game Book” scratch ticket she bought Thursday at Casey’s, 4397 N. Center Point Road in Center Point. She claimed the seventh of eight top prizes of $100,000 available in the game.

FFA Fruit Sales

With the Vinton-Shellsburg FFA Fruit Sales finally getting wrapped up, from delivering fruit and collecting the rest of the money, the final amount of money raised is $32,013! The month of November was filled with getting customer orders in and trying to reach as much people as possible in such a short time, because the next month, on the 15th, the two delivery trucks arrived at the high school with boxes upon boxes of fruit, sausage, nuts, and cheeses.

Shellsburg students learn basics of skiing and Sundown Mountain

Instructors gave VS 5th graders their first ski lessons Monday at Sundown Mountain. The VS fifth graders left Shellsburg Elementary Monday morning for the bus trip to the Sundown Mountain ski resort near Dubuque. A few teachers and several parents, including some who had never skiied before, joined the 5th graders in the snow. Several ski instructors offered lessons to the participants at every level. The resort offered special school pricing, and funding for the trip came from a Vinton Community Foundation grant.

Friday's visit by Senator Joni Ernst to Virginia Gay Hospital

Staff attending the meeting pose with Senator Ernst United States Senator Joni Ernst visited Virginia Gay Hospital Friday to gain better understanding of challenges facing rural communities and rural hospitals. Senator Ernst was also interested in receiving an update on Virginia Gay’s effort to create a national demonstration project to integrate mental health into primary care. Mike Riege, Virginia Gay Hospital CEO, Melissa Smith, Director of the Benton County Public Health Department at Virginia Gay, and Mark Mossman, hospital board president, were in Washington D.

Smokey Bear/Woodsy Owl Poster winners

1st grade 2nd place Mia VonSprecken The Vinton Garden Club locally sponsored the 2015 Smokey Bear/Woodsy Owl Poster Contest a National Garden Clubs, Inc. youth project. The club received posters from 126 children in 2015.   The first place winners locally will advance to the State level to be judged and if they win they will go on  to Regional level then National level.

Students asked to create art for Iowa State Fair Calendar

 Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey today encouraged students from Iowa to consider submitting artwork to be considered for inclusion in the “From the Farm to You” calendar.  The calendars are distributed by the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship at the Iowa State Fair and include artwork that emphasizes the connection between the production of Iowa’s farmers and the products used by people every day.

Highway 30 fatality: Vehicle with 10 passengers involved in four-car wreck today

The Iowa State Patrol is investigating a multiple-fatality accident on Highway 30 involving a minivan in which 10 people were riding and three other vehicles this morning. According to the ISP, three people have been killed and several more injured.  The minivan, a 2007 Toyota Sienna, according to the ISP, was westbound on Highway 30 when the driver lost control due to ice on the road.

Council supports game bird farm, but must change city rules to allow it

The Vinton City Council is facing a minor, but unique challenge: How to change the city rules so that the former Vinton Animal Shelter can become a game bird farm. During its meeting last Thursday, the council members heard from Scott Barron and Will Ketchen, who want to raised 3,000 to 5,000 pheasants and quail each year at the shelter site southeast of town.

V-S School cancelled due to weather

There will be no classes today, February 3, due to the weather. Stay home and stay safe! There will now be classes on February 15 and March 29.
