New VSHS leadership class offers tributes to local heroes
A new leadership class at Vinton-Shellsburg High School is helping students to learn a variety of leadership and communication skills and techniques.
One of the lessons is recognizing the impact that the leadership of others has one each of us.
To reinforce this lesson, teachers Joe Johnson and Heather Kalous gave their class members a unique challenge: Write an essay/letter to a local hero, then read it to them at a special event in front of the class.
Mom's Movement: Photo session may lead to more opportunities to help women
A few days ago, several women who have different views of parenting and motherhood gathered at the historic Vinton Depot for a photo shoot.
Each photo, taken by Kendra Spencer and Jamie Stander of Kendra Lee Photography, included two women who had different experiences, philosophies, or approaches to parenting.
“It was an amazing opportunity,” said Kendra “Orchestrating and bring a part of something that is so much more significant than we realize.
Tree Walk includes variety of styles, themes, colors, including 'Frozen'
One of the favorite trees -- especially for children -- among the 2015 edition of the Virginia Gay Hospital Tree Walk is the "Frozen" themed tree.
The white tree with blue trim and ribbon includes decorations from the famous animated movie. The winning bidder will also receive a bag full of movie-related items, a board game and dolls representing Anna, Elsa and Olaf, the sisters and snowman characters from the movie.

To Benton County residents,
The fall season is coming to an end, which means that deer will be on the move during the rut. Please drive safely and look for deer, especially at dusk and dawn.
Also, if you’re mentoring youth hunters this season. Remember to discuss the reason for harvesting your own meat, and what it means to you as an experienced hunter.
National Convention: National Chapter Award, American Degrees for VSHS FFA
On October 28th, 2015, fifteen Vinton-Shellsburg FFA Chapter members and six chaperones loaded up three vans at 5:00 am to leave for Louisville, Kentucky where the 88th National FFA Convention was held. On the way to Kentucky the members made a small detour so that they could go to Fair Oaks Dairy Adventure in Indiana.
The tour was around 4 hours and gave the members the time to experience the one of the largest dairy farms as well as seeing what modern pig farming involves.
VSHS teacher Fleming a finalist for Iowa Teacher of the Year
Louise Fleming, the former Ag teacher and currently a high school instructional coach and co-FFA advisor, was named one of the four Iowa Teacher of the Year finalists.
The award ultimately went to long-time Fairfield English teacher Scott Slechta. Gov. Terry Branstad presented the award to Slechta at a special ceremony this week.

After countless phone calls last year and several already this year, I wanted to provide a little information on the Holiday Train that once ran roundtrip from Palo to Vinton. I know it was a popular, well attended event but unfortunately, the train will not be returning to Vinton in 2015.

But the high school students of Kelly Steffen -- born after the Berlin Wall came down -- grew up not knowing how those issues -- and fears -- were a constant, and often daily, part of American life.
Kendra Peterson chosen to be a member of the 2015 All-State Band
Kendra Peterson of Vinton-Shellsburg High School has attained the highest individual honor available to Iowa high school musicians by being selected as a member of the 2015 All-State Band. Kendra is the Daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Randy and Julie Peterson and is an instrumental student of Director Nick Waymire.
The 2015 Festival will celebrate the 69th anniversary of this prestigious event.
Cooper receives Anthony and Miller Scholarships
Dottie Anderson recently met with Kaila Cooper to congratulate her on being named the recipient of both the Dr. Tony Anthony Scholarship and the Jeanette M. Miller scholarship. Kaila was awarded her scholarships as an employee of Virginia Gay’s Nursing and Rehab who wants to further her education.
Kaila, who graduated Vinton-Shellsburg in 2011, worked as a CNA through high school and until she passed her exams for her RN degree.
