Relay for Life: Area quilter continues helping fund fight against cancer

Vicky Buckingham made this quilt for the Relay for Life. The Relay for Life takes place in a little over three months, and one annual participant is doing her part to raise money to fight cancer. 2009 VS grad Kelsey Kremer gaining fans, followers with her photos, videos

Kelsey Kremer is gaining much attention through her photojournalism, including this ISU BB photo. Vinton native Kelsey Kremer, in a little more than two years, has already compiled a list of achievements as a photojournalist at the Des Moines Register. Kelsey, the daughter of Jon and Kristina Kremer, won first place from the Iowa Newspaper Association – and was nominated for a Regional Emmy – for a video documentary about the Younkers building, which burned down in downtown Des Moines two years ago.

FFA members discuss program at 8th grade orientation

On February 23rd, 2016 the Vinton-Shellsburg FFA Chapter had the opportunity to set up their own booth at the 8th Grade Orientation Night at the Vinton-Shellsburg High School. To recruit members, the chapter brought in a bearded dragon, chickens, and a rabbit to grab the attention of 8th graders and then as the students came up to pet the animals, they also had the opportunity to learn more about agricultural classes and the National FFA Organization.

Sub-Districts: VS FFA members do well in many categories

VS FFA members earned many honors at Sub-Districts. On February 24th, 2016 the Vinton-Shellsburg FFA Chapter went to Hawkeye Community College for Sub-District Convention. 23 members decided to go to this convention to compete in different Leadership CDEs. All of the members did fantastic at Sub-Districts, with one group even advancing to District Convention, held on March 12th. The results are

'Rex's Exes:' ACT 1 'Cake War' series continues on Palace stage

'Rex's Exes:' Rachel Bonar, Mandy Barker, Allison Watkins and Bonnie Beyer rehearse a scene. The ACT 1 cast and crew of "Rex's Exes" are preparing to open their sequel to "Red Velvet Cake Wars" this Thursday night on the Palace stage. Many of the performers return to play their same roles in the sequel, which focuses on the bizarre characters of the Verdeen family and their latest shenanigans. In "Rex's Exes," Peaches (played by Mandy Barker) continues to be haunted by Rex's memory, and eventually learns why Rex disappeared, and also finds out more troubling things about his past.

Barb Wittmer: Named Iowa Mother of the Year by American Mothers An area woman has been recognized as the Iowa Woman of the Year by the American Mothers, the organization that Eleanor Roosevelt and Mamie Eisenhower began to promote mother day and improve the lives of mothers and children throughout the world. Barbara was born in Wheeling West Virginia on January 27th 1937. Her father was a salesman so the family moved a lot.

  The Vinton Police Department has initiated a K-9 Officer Fundraising Campaign.  The Vinton Police Department is adding a K-9 Officer to assist in the effort of combatting crime in Vinton and the surrounding communities.  Having a K-9 Officer creates a valuable asset to Law Enforcement Officers, who are working diligently to protect the citizens of this community.

100 + 3: Bethlehem Lutheran donates to Retrieving Freedom K-9 program

Retrieving Freedom is a non-profit organization located in Waverly Iowa.  The organization provides service dogs to children with autism and to military veterans who return home with no visible physical  injuries but intense PTSD.   Service dogs interacting with autistic children become a social bridge for these children, often helping even non-verbal children begin forms of verbal conversation.
