Supervisors seek study before considering approval of ATV ordinance
The discussion over a proposed ordinance that would allow ATV owners to drive on gravel roads in Benton County continued on Tuesday, with no changes expected in the county rules in the near future.
Louie Guynn of rural Mount Auburn spoke to the supervisors during their regular weekly meeting, asking for an update on the ordinance, telling them that some ATV owners had thought the ordinance had already passed.

Blue Creek Christmas: Light display fills neighborhood north of Center Point
At 7 p.m. Sunday, Joshua Meyer pushed a big green button, and the corner of Blue Creek Court and Fee Street a few miles north of Center Point lit up, filling an entire neighborhood with lights.
Blue Creek Christmas has begun.
Aaron Maue began the computerized light display, synchronized with music, in 2010. The display has grown in size and popularity since then.
50 years of lights: Heidi Koopman continues father's tradition
Fifty years ago, Larry Kersten put the first of his mechanical lighted Christmas decorations along the family's fence at 5598 22nd Avenue Trail northwest of Vinton.
Now, Heidi Koopman is marking the 50th year of the light display her father began in 1965, turning on the display on Thanksgiving night.
The display captures many of the social and cultural trends that Larry Kersten observed during his 30+ years of creating displays.
Angel Tree sign-up under way now; donations welcome
The Annual Benton County Angel Tree program is underway! Salvation Army Bell Ringing under way; volunteers needed
The Salvation Army Bell Ringing began for the season on ovember 23 at the Fareway in Vinton. The bell ringers will be present store hours – from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. each day through Christmas, ending December 26.
Last year, the Salvation Army kettle in Vinton collected $15,003.00. Of that, 70% of the money stays local for direct aid. The other 30% goes to help fund and support regional and national efforts.
VGH Tree Walk a success; many trees share personal stories
Kim Swore wandered among the trees on Tuesday, wondering who would be the final bidder on her entry in this year's Virginia Gay Hospital Tree Walk.
Swore created a tree with a "Rainbow of Memories" theme in honor of the five young people who died in a traffic accident in April. She knew all of the "Urbana 5" and considered Triston Randall to be an adopted son.
Herger sings in Opus Honor Choir Festival
Davia Herger, Vinton-Shellsburg eighth grade vocalist, recently participated in the thirtieth annual Opus Honor Choir Festival. Over 3,500 students from the state of Iowa were nominated by their directors for 720 positions in the four Opus Honor Choirs. Selections were made by means of a recorded audition.
Davia sang in the alto 2 section in the 7th & 8th Grade Treble Clef Honor Choir under the direction of Hannah Ryan, Johnston High School, Johnston Community Schools.
