Viking baseball wrap up: New records set in 2016 season
The Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings and Coach Jim Struve gathered at Pizza Ranch for their annual wrap-up this week. Coach Struve honored some players for setting records, and presented team awards as well as all-conference and all-district honors. A 7-3 win over Akron-Westfield Friday night made the Lansing Kee High softball team the Class 1 champions.
The team is coached by Vinton-Shellsburg graduate Liz Hill, who starred on the diamond for the Vikettes before setting home run records at Mount Mercy.
Hill also led the team, which includes three of her cousins, to 2nd place at State in 2014. Central DeWitt ace keeps Vikes from advancing to State

4th Annual V-S Alumni Softball Game, Saturday, July 30th
Come join us for our 4th annual V-S alumni softball game on Saturday, July 30th at 6pm! When Vinton-Shellsburg varsity softball coach Bari Parrott went to the first-round game of the Class 1A State Softball Tournament, he found himself cheering for both teams.
One one side – Belle Plaine – were Parrott's daughters, Lily and Grace. On the other, one of his former star players – Liz Hill. Hill, a 2008 V-S graduate, played Vikettes before going to Mount Mercy, where she set a new career home run record. Demo Derby's name a reminder of how much Stanley loved such events
When Jerry Stanley wasn't working or spending time with family, he was doing what he loved most: Getting ready for the next demolition derby.
“He was always in his shop working on cars. He even built a mash car one year,” says Stanley's daughter, Lauren Carolan-Stanley. “People called him the Demo King. But besides demoing he also loved the races; he built a 4-by-4 Jeff Gordon car for a push truck.
Vikings one win away from returning to State Baseball Tournament
With a 9-2 win over Marion at the Benton Community baseball field in Van Horne on Monday, the Vinton-Shellsburg varsity baseball team is just one win away from returning to State for the second season in a row.
But to get to Des Moines, they must defeat a 30-11 Central DeWitt team that has already defeated V-S twice this season.
The Vikings travel to DeWitt for a 7 p. District Baseball Site Changed for July 18th
Due to the storm damage to the Vinton-Shellsburg field, the Class 3A, District 7 – Vinton-Shellsburg vs. Marion baseball game has been moved from Vinton-Shellsburg to the Benton Community field.
Start time will still be 7:00 pm.
District baseball: Struve's first career homer caps Viking win over Benton
Nathan Struve came to the plate in the top of the 7th, hoping to give the Vikings an insurance run.
An error allowed Benton to score a run in the bottom of the 6th (because it was a District contest, the official home team is not determined by the location of the game), and the Vikings were hoping to add to their 3-2 lead.
Connor Miracle ended up on second on a scoring error; Will Edward was hit by a pitch.
