VS sports teams begin season; complete fall schedule listed

The 2016 fall sports campaign begins with Friday's football games between Vinton-Shellsburg and Center Point Urbana. High school volleyball, cross country and swim teams, as well as VS Middle School cross country, volleyball and football teams, all have a variety of contest scheduled See the complete schedule HERE.

Horst, Smith lead VS cross country runners in first meet

The VS girls finished 8th at the Mount Vernon Cross Country meet on Tuesday. Grace Horst and Cole Smith were the first V-S runners to finish in their meets as the VS Vikings and Vikettes competed in the first cross country meet of the season, at Mount Vernon. Horst finished 7th in the girls race with a time of 21:19; Smith finished 24th among boys with a time of 18:07. In team scoring, the Vikings were 5th and the Vikettes, 8th.

Three in a row: Matt Martin wins Men's Championship event at Country Club

Matt Martin won the VCC Men's Championship over Shawn Voss, Saturday. The 2016 Vinton Country Club Men’s Championship was held Sunday, August 21, and Matt Martin won his 3rd straight championship  in a tight battle with Shawn Voss. Martin was fueled by back to back birdies on 13 and 14 to help propel him to the title. Voss started his day with a birdie and ended with a birdie to finish 1 over par, forcing Martin to par the last two holes for an even par 70 and a one stroke win.

Blowout brings VS athletes, cheerleaders together for pre-season introductions

VS football cheerleader Kayla Udell soars high above her peers during a stunt on Friday. The VSHS football players put on their pads and helmets to scrimmage against Marion; the volleyball team members scrimmaged against each other. And every athlete and cheerleader involved in fall sports at the high school and middle school level --- along with their coaches -- had the chance to stand before the home crowd during the annual Vinton Shellsburg Blowout.

Fall Blowout set for Friday: VS teams to be introduced

Lauren Tandy earns IWGA's Ann Griffel Scholarship

Lauren Tandy, right, pictured with sister Rachel, is a recipient of the Ann Griffel Scholarship. 2016 Vinton-Shellsburg graduate Lauren Tandy has become the latest Vikette golfer to receive the Iowan Women Golfers Association's Ann Griffel Scholarship. Along with four other female golf enthusiasts who graduated from an Iowa high school this year, Tandy will receive a $2,000 scholarship payable to the college she chooses. She will attend Mount Mercy College and be a member of the Mustang golf team.

Knights Youth Football Club holds camp; to play home games in Dysart

Here is a photo of 55 of the 85 participants in the Knights Youth Football Club.   The club has teams that play padded football at the 3rd-4th level as well as the 5th-6th level. Deadline for Mini Masters Golf Tournament
