Vikings split with Benton, improve to 16-11

With two weeks left in the regular season, the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings baseball team is 16-11 and hoping to keep improving as they seek to return to the State Tournament. Tyler Rippel, who pitched for the Vikes at State last year, held Benton Community scoreless in the first of two games on Monday. The Vikings won 9-0, as Rippel allowed four hits and three walks in pitching all seven innings.

22nd Annual Hogan Memorial set for this Sunday

The home track of the IMCA Modified division is host to the 22nd annual Hogan Memorial this Sunday, July 3. Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modifieds race for a possible top prize of $5,000 during the holiday weekend show at Benton County Speedway in Vinton.  The 2016 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot-qualifying feature pays a minimum of $2,000 to win, plus lap money, a $500 hard charger award and halfway leader bonus of $250 plus a Hoosier race tire.

Vikings improve to 14-8; to travel to DeWitt Central tonight

The Vinton-Shellsburg varsity baseball team won two of three games early this week and has double-headers tonight and a game at Mount Vernon on Friday before hosting rival Benton Community for a double-header on Monday.  Coach Jim Struve summarized this week's games: Monday---Vikings split a conference double header with Clear Creek-Amana losing the first game 2-5 and winning the second game 9-3.

Top Male Bowler: Nick Stein honored at first All-Iowa Sports Banquet

V-S bowler and state champ Nick Stein is among the first All-Iowa Sports Award winners. The Vinton-Shellsborg bowler who won the Class 1A state individual title with his best tournament performance ever (a two-game total of 513) has earned one more award. Nick Stein was honored as the Top Male Bowler at the first ever All-Iowa Sports Banquet, organized by the Des Moines Register. "Going to Des Moines for an All-Iowa Sport Awards banquet was a cool thing; being among the top three finalists was even cooler," said Nick.

Urbana 5 Night:Driver discusses return after roll-over in 'Most important race'

Dakoda Sellers rolls around the track as part of the Urbana 5 memorial parade. In the movies, Dakoda Sellers would have won last night’s Sport Mod feature at the Benton County Speedway. But the “Drive for 5” themed car that honors the five young people who died in an accident last April – including Nikki Jacobsen, Quentin Ary and three young members of Seller’s pit crew –  Zoey and Hunter Tuttle and their older brother, Triston Randall – did not end up in Victory Lane.

VSHS Announces Several Spring Activities recognized for Academic Achievements

Vinton-Shellsburg High School is pleased to announce that several 2015-16 Spring activities have been recognized for their academic achievements. The Iowa High School Athletic Association and the Iowa Girls’ High School Athletic Union recognize the following: The Distinguished Academic Achievement Award is awarded to the teams who achieved a combined grade point average of 3.

Vikings win two at home; improve to 8-4

Scottie Wirth earned the 'W' for the Vikings in their 6-1 win during Wednesday's sweep of Beckman. Scottie Wirth pitched a complete game, holding the Dyersville Beckman to 1 run as the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings won the first of two baseball games Wednesday in Vinton.  The Vikings won the second game, 5-4. In addition to Wednesday's sweep, the Vikes won a pair of big victories at Center Point-Urbana on Monday.  See the Vikings' stat page HERE See more photos HERE.

Tandy/Stueck duo earns 6th place finish at State Co-Ed Meet

6th at State Co-Ed Meet: VS seniors Lauren Tandy and Tyler Stueck. The Vinton-Shellsburg golf teams combined two players off their teams to compete in an alternate shot format at Coldwater Golf Course in Ames for the Co-Ed State tourney Tuesday. Lauren Tandy and Tyler Stueck shot a 77 to medal and finish 6th for their best finish in the three-year run they had as partners in this event. The day was perfect until the winds picked up towards noon, which made the course tougher with the no-mow areas and links style of golf course, but they managed the course well.
