Vikings fall to CPU in a 6-0 heartbreaker

VINTON - The Vinton-Shellsburg Viking football team (0-1) took on the Center Point-Urbana Stormin' Pointers (1-0) at the Karr Athletic Complex on Aug. 27 and were defeated 6-0, although the game was scoreless at the halftime break. CPU scored their lone TD of the game with 7:29 to go in the third quarter, [st] up on a missed holding call. The Vikings marched the length of the field in the unsuing drive, but Curtis Erickson was stopped twice at the one-foot line and V-S gave up the ball on downs.

Vikette volleyball goes 2-2 at Warrior Invitational

TAMA - The Vinton-Shellsburg volleyball team (4-3) took to the Meskwaki [ST]tlement School in Tama for Warrior Invitational on Aug. 28. The first match of the day was against the Meskwaki Warriors. The Vikettes defeated the Warriors, 2-0 (21-9, 21-8). Then they played the Belle Plaine Plainsmen and defeated them 2-0 (21-15, 21-15). The North Tama Redhawks defeated the Vikettes 2-0 (28-26, 23-21) and the Roland-Story Norsemen defeated the Vikettes 2-1 (17-21, 21-16, 15-13).

Justyce Dominick won the 50 and 500 Freestyle, Lauren Moore won the 100 Backstroke (just .12 seconds off her season best time from last year - a great way to start a season), and Lexi Goodell won the 100 Breaststroke. IMCA Modified Troy Cordes wins the 7th championship night and 8th points title-photo Jim Wittke A number of close points battles were finally [st]tled as champions were crowned on the final night of racing for the 2021 season at Benton County Speedway.Troy Cordes and Cristian Grady made the most of the finale by locking up track titles with season championship feature wins on the fast, smooth, multi-grooved, quarter-mile Bullring.Features were lined straight-up based on season point totals, allowing those in contention for track titles to [st]tle things from the front row.

74 year old Woman, Mary Umbarger, Wins Demo Derby

Mary Umbarger, competed and won the Demolition Derby at the Benton County Speedway in Forever 21 By Macy StoutMary Umbarger is 74 years old from Keystone Iowa. She was a nurse back in the day and would travel with her husband when he was in the Vietnam war. After the war, they came back home and did all of the activities that the couple enjoyed doing together and was living life. Mary and her husband Tom use to participate in the demolition derby way back in the day (the late 60s) and then stopped because they started a family.

Stewart scores first Benton County Speedway victory

Derrick Stewart raced to the first BCS victory of his career, IMCA Modified div. Photo Jim Wittke Points battles remained tight Sunday night at Benton County Speedway. With the season championship program coming up next Sunday, drivers positioned themselves for a title run in the final event leading up to the season finale.In the KISS Country 96.5 IMCA Modified division, a first-time winner had to hold off a hard-charging title contender in that feature.

Lil Racer Clubhouse planning for the final two weeks at the Track

With the rainout tonight at the Bullring, the club has only two more weeks in operation at the track in 2021 planned.Next Sunday, the contents of our tan metal donation box, located on the front of the Lil Racer Clubhouse will be given at the end of the night to Cedar Valley Hospice, in memory of Crew Chief Mitch's father Glenn Swinton. His dad passed away 5 years ago, on August 15, 2016 on Mitch's mom's birthday.

Cops Take 1st "Pitches For Pins" Over V-S Wrestlers, 16-14

VPD's Wes Meyer follows the flight of his foul ball VINTON -- A big crowd filled the Vinton-Shellsburg baseball field grounds Saturday for the first "Pitches For Pins" fund-raiser for the VIking and Vikette wrestling programs. A team of local law enforcement faced off against members of the wrestling team -- along with a couple of "ringers" -- and while the wrestlers led most of the way, the cops came back to take a 16-14 victory; not that the outcome mattered that much.

Capitol to Corndogs Clean 5K Run Aug. 19

On Thursday, August 19th at 6:00 pm, the Green Runners of Des Moines will lead a run from the State Capitol to the Iowa State Fair, collecting trash along the way. The event is free and the first thirty runners to sign up will receive free admission to the State Fair and a free beverage from the Budweiser tent. This marks the 8th year the event has taken place.

Benton County Bullring Lil Racer Car Club OPEN for business Saturday at the Demo

The Benton County Speedway Bullring Lil Racer Car Club will be OPEN for business this Saturday night, August 7, for the Demo Derby at the track! Power Wheel registration begins at the clubhouse as soon as grandstand gates are opened, right up until 5:45 for the 6 PM start time trackside. All power wheel drivers are expected to sign a track waiver AND have their own helmet and power wheel.
