Lil’ Racers Car Club kicks off their Second Year at the Speedway

The five-foot-tall Minnie Mouse went home with Adelida Pierson of Vinton. It all started with a trip to the races for Mitch Swinton. In 2005, he took his then-6-year-old-son Ross to the track in West Liberty and quickly realized there wasn’t much for kids to do. That’s when he decided to start the Lil’ Racer Car Club which is beginning its second season at the Benton County Speedway in Vinton. "I ran clubs at many different race tracks in Iowa over the previous 16 seasons.

Carter, Reynolds thrill in opening night wins at the Bullring

It was deja vu for Brayton Carter Sunday night at the Benton County Speedway Bullring. Two weeks after earning a last lap pass for the win in Frostbuster action, Carter repeated his late race heroics in the season points opener for the Karl Kustoms Northern SportMods presented by Christie Door Company.From his front row start, Brian Kauffman led throughout the 15-lapper, but was challenged by Kyle Olson during his time out front.

Lapan-Islas's record day sends 5th-ranted Vikings past MV, 11-3

Vernon By SAGE HOLMES, VT SportswriterVINTON – The Vikings took on the Mustangs of Mount Vernon at the Karr Athletic Complex on April 16 and earned an 11-3 win.  Senior David Lapan-Islas scored five goals in the contest, giving him the program's single-game scoring record. The Vikings increased their goal differential to 50-3 with the win.  The Vikings moved to 6-0 on the season and saw their 45-0 goal streak just before halftime, as the Mustangs scored a penalty kick in the 36th minute.

Strong start to season for Vikette track with top finishes at first four meets

By SAGE HOLMES - VT SportswriterThe Vinton-Shellsburg Vikette varsity track and field team and head coach Heather Kalous have had a dominating start to the 2021 season, winning the non-scored Union Early Bird Girls' Track and Field meet, earning a third-place finish in Class A of the Jesup Invitational, a second-place finish at the Marion High School girls' track meet, and a tenth-place finish at the Ruth Ahrens Girls Relays at Iowa Valley High School.

Swayzer's a Laker

Vikette Aza Swayzer (center) joined by her mom, Lisa Stein (left) and teammate Kiera Ott VINTON - Vinton-Shellburg girls' basketball senior Aza Swayzer made it official Wednesday, signing her letter of intent to play basketball at Iowa Lakes Community College in Estherville. The 5-11 Swayzer was a big part of the Vikettes' WaMaC West title run this past season after missing much of her junior year due to a torn ACL. She'll be joining a Laker squad that is coming off an 8-12 season with only eight players on the team.

Vikettes lose 4-1 to Clippers

By SAGE HOLMESVinton Today Sport WriterVINTON – Finally...some drama!Amid a sea of flannel and camo, the Vinton-Shellsburg boys' soccer team honored a fallen teammate Thursday night with a dramatic 1-0 shutout of perennial power Clear Creek Amana at Karr Athletic Complex.  The lone goal of the night came on a David Lapan-Islas penalty kick in the first half, but the difference in the contest came down to the Gold Rush defense.

Vinton Native named as member of the 2021 NFF Hampshire Honor Society

Drew Wiley (#59) was among those named to the NFF Hampshire Honor Society Along with two others, Drew Wiley, a Kansas State football senior, during the 2020 season was named a member of the 2021 National Football Foundation (NFF) Hampshire Honor Society. The two other Wildcats who earned the honor were Tyler Burns and Brock Monty. The three are part of an elite group of 910 players from 255 different schools from across the NCAA divisions and the NAIA who qualified for membership in the Society's 15th year.

Swenson collects hat trick in a 10-0 win over Cardinals

Davis' four goals tame Mustangs 5-1

By SAGE HOLMESVinton Today Sports WriterINDEPENDENCE – The Vinton-Shellsburg Vikette varsity soccer team (2-0, 1-0 WaMaC West) took on the Independence Mustangs (1-1, 0-1 WaMaC West) at Lyle Leinbaugh Field in Independence and came away with a 5-1 win Friday night.  In the win, Vikette sophomore striker Abby Davis scored four goals en route to a 5-1 Vikette win in game two of the season at Lyle Leinbaugh Field.
