The Voyagers' "Last Dance" was a triumph

Molly Haisman dramatically closes  “Enter Sandman” Vinton-Shellsburg's Voyager dance team faced a lot of challanges in the 2020-21 season, but Saturday night they put it all behind them with a spectacular Spring Show, "The Last Dance."Like most programs, the Voyagers' season was disrupted by Covid, the Derecho, and the realities of the time. But under returning head coach -- and Voyager veteran -- Melanie Davis, and assistant coach and 2020 Voyager grad Allissa Hendrix, the 22-member squad put together a great season.

Lapan-Islas signs to be a Red Tail

David Lapan-Islas signs to play soccer with Hawkeye. In a Friday morning ceremony in the Garrison fieldhouse, Vinton-Shellsburg soccer senior standout David Lapan-Islas signed his letter of intent to play soccer at Hawkeye Community College next season.Lapan-Islas was joined at the signing by his parents Tony and Renee, along with his sister Mya, Viking head coach Kyle McAbee, HCC head coach Leo Driscoll and assistants Anthony Velez and Nicole Driscoll, and Red Tail women's player -- and former Vikette -- Taryn Sutton.

Vikette bowlers roll to 4th at State, Harrelson is individual champion

State Champion Christina Harrelson The Vinton-Shellburg girls' bowling team grabbed a fourth-place finish at the Girls State Bowling tournament at Waterloo's Cadillac Lanes this morning.Coach Amber Pattee's Vikettes finished with a team score of 2739, paced by senior Christina Harrelson, who's two-game score of 478 not only led the VIkettes, but also the State, as Harrelson was crowned as the individual State champion.

Alternative Baseball Organization seeks Leaders and Players in the Vinton Area

Taylor Duncan, a 25-year-old from Dallas, Georgia, has autism. That however is not what he's known for. He is also the commissioner/director of the Alternative Baseball Organization. The ABO is a 501c3 authentic baseball experience for teens 15+ and adults with autism and other disabilities to gain social and physical skills for success in life both on and off the diamond.

Vinton-Shellsburg WAMAC Bowling Champions

Both V-S Boys and Girls Bowling Teams walk away as WAMAC Champions On Friday, we competed in the Varsity WaMaC Tourney for Bowling and as it turns out, both Vinton Shellsburg teams came to play.  This was such an exciting day with great outcomes.  Due to the current pandemic, things have changed in many ways and this is no different for our Bowling Season.  Normally we would bowl on separate lanes for boys and girls and they would not get to see all of the scores except for what the coaches [upd] them with.

Vikettes advance in Regionals, as Lucy H-V hits 1,000

Here's Lucy! VINTON -- There were a couple of big storylines to follow Saturday afternoon at Garrison Fieldhouse. And the good part was that both stories had a happy ending for the ladies in white.The 13th-rated Vinton-Shellsburg Vikettes shook off an icy start to their night to roll past Mount Vernon, 64-39 in the first round of the Class 3A Regional basketball tournament in a late matinee.

So anyway...Tuesday night I was able to make a Facebook post announcing that Coach Rich Haisman's Vinton-Shellsburg Vikettes had won a share of the WaMaC West championship for the first time since 2001. That was an exciting, joyous and altogether staggering statement for someone with my mileage to make. This team has been a blast to watch; a collection of seniors who've survived some of the leanest years imaginable, coupled with a collection of sophomores who've brought an energy back to what was a dying program.

Rickels drills 23 as Vikings roll past Williamsburg, 63-56

VINTON -- CJ Rickels exploded for 23 points, and was joined in double figures by fellow members of the Class of 2021 Derron Hughes and David Lapan-Islas as the Vinton-Shellsburg boys' basketball team (8-9 on the season) bested Williamsburg 63-56 in a Senior Night WaMaC West showdown at the Garrison Fieldhouse Tuesday night.Coming off last week's painful 56-38 loss to Center Point-Urbana, Coach Joe Johnson's Vikes came out strong, leading 15-9 after one period and 36-20 at the half.
