Vikings Swimmers Sail Past Grinnell-BGM

Tuesday night was senior night for the “Storming” Vikings swimmers as they faced the challenge of a tough opponent that they had not beaten in at least a dozen years.  Despite the smaller crowd due to the pandemic, there was great excitement in the air and the home team did not disappoint as they rose to the challenge in claiming a tightly contested 50-44 victory over Grinnell-BGM.

No. 15 Vikettes drop OT heartbreaker to CC-A, 59-56

VINTON --Heartbreaker...no other way to put it...it was a heartbreaker.The 15th-rated Vinton-Shellsburg Vikettes (11-2) dropped a intense gut-wrenching 59-56 overtime WaMaC West battle to Clear Creek-Amana at the Garrison Fieldhouse. After a back-and-forth fourth quarter, the Vikettes led 53-50 in the waning seconds of regulation. With six seconds to go, the Clippers tried to get the ball inside, but the shot rimmed out.

Vikings' comeback comes up short; Indee pulls out 56-50 win

VINTON -- A wild fourth quarter, quite a few acrobatic defensive plays, and a raucous home crowd, just let of our Covid jail, still wasn't enough Friday night as Coach Joe Johnson's Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings dropped a heartbreaking 56-50 decision Friday night at Garrison Fieldhouse.The Vikings (3-6, 1-6 in the WaMaC West) got out to an early 10-6 lead on the Mustangs, but it didn't hold for long.

Depth Propels Stormin’ Vikings Strong Showing

 The Stormin’ Viking swim team used both the normally strong top of the line-up and some great depth Saturday in scoring a strong second place finish at the annual Waterloo Invitational.  The event was moved to Cedar Falls due to a pool failure at Waterloo – but neither that nor a 30-minute delay due to a computer crash – could slow down the red-hot Vikes.

Vikettes ride H-V's 23 to a big win over Williamsburg, 66-53

VINTON -- Minus their head coach, the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikettes moved to 9-1 and took over sole possession of the WaMaC West lead with a hard-fought 66-53 win over Williamsburg Tuesday at the Garrison Fieldhouse. With head coach Rich Haisman out on the sick list, assistant coach Andy Smith took the controls for the Vikettes, and he got to direct "The Lucy Show.

Vikings blast South Tama, 57-31

VINTON -- The Vinton-Shellsburg boys' basketball team rode a red-hot start into 2021 Monday night and came away with a 57-31 WaMaC West win over South Tama.The Vikings (3-4 overall), pulled out to an 18-4 first quarter lead and were up 42-10 at the half. Derron Hughes drained four three-pointers on his way to a game high 15 points, while CJ Rickels joined him in double figures with 12.

(Photo by Laurie Ortner) MAQUOKETA -- Three Vinton-Shellsburg wrestlers won championships and two others medalled in a solid performance at Maquoketa's Zimmerman Invitational.Freshman 113-pounder Carter Lamont, 132-pounder Damon Swenson and 138-pounder Brady Ortner all picked up titles, while Bryce Radeke picked up a runner-up finish and 106-pounder Aldin Swanson  was third.

During this pandemic, so many changes have made High School more stressful than normal.  Lucky for the Winter sports, we can compete with requirements, masks, and distancing.  The bowling team this year has 48 bowlers which means that there are several bowlers unable to compete in the scheduled meets. Some of these kids are new to bowling and have improved greatly.

VS Bowlers take on Cedar Falls & Western Dubuque Friday night at Cadillac Lanes
