Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings dropped a heartbreaking 18-14 decision to South Tama VINTON -- A fourth quarter blocked punt and bad-bounce interception were the difference Friday night as the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings dropped a heartbreaking 18-14 decision to South Tama at a rainy Karr Athletic Complex. The Vikings (1-2) went up 14-0 in the first quarter on a 37-yard catch and run from Brooks Erickson to Max Vasquez, and a two-yard Erickson TD run.

Vikettes move to 3-0 with 50-44 win over West Delaware

VINTON - Three seniors combined for 31 points Friday night as Coach Rich Haisman's Vikettes went to 3-0 on the year with a 50-44 win over West Delaware at the Garrison Fieldhouse.The Vikettes led 11-6, but the Hawks managed to come back and take a 13-11 lead in the second period before V-S roared back to take a 21-18 lead into the half. After taking a 33-30 lead into the final eight minutes, West Delaware was able to tie the game at 38 with under five minutes to go.

Vikings fall in opener to Benton, 28-21

VINTON — It was one of those nights.Despite a big statistical advantage Friday, the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings dropped their 2020 football season opener to Benton Community, 28-21, as the Bobcats took full advantage of one of the biggest numbers of the night: mistakes.On the first play from scrimmage, junior Max Vasquez took off left tackle and put the Benton defense in the rear view mirror for a 70-yard touchdown, only to have it nullified by a penalty on the Benton five.

Erickson's TD, staunch Viking defense enough to sink Sailors, 7-6

Viking QB Brooks Erickson heads for the end zone on a 16-yard TD run, giving V-S a 7-6 halftime lead VINTON — Brooks Erickson ran 16 yards for a late first half touchdown, Bennett Rickles added an extra point that was the mathematical difference Friday night as the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings edged Waterloo Columbus, 7-6 at the Karr Athletic Complex.It might have been the difference on paper, but the real difference came down  to a Herculean effort by the Viking defense.

V-S Bowlers Season Opener Results

Girls Varsity was led by Junior Anna Becker with a 214 and 225 for a great 439 series. Viking kicker Jesse Pladsen named 2nd team All-State

Viking Jesse Pladsen (4) named 2nd-team All-Stater as at kicker Vinton-Shellsburg senior placekicker Jesse Pladsen was the named a 2nd-team All-Stater Monday by the Iowa Print Sport Writers Association.Pladsen led Class 2A with six field goals during the season on just six attempts and his 42-yarder against Solon was the second-longest in 2A. In addition, Pladsen was 11 for 14 on extra points.

History Made: Vikette wrestlers start a new era

Schedules have been turned upside, middle school sports have been put on hold and some colleges are even dropping sports.But at Vinton-Shellsburg High School, there was been historic growth.This past Monday, 12 girls reported the wrestling room for the first practice of the brand-new Vikette wrestling program.

VSU Swim team goes to Qualifying District Meet

VSU girls swam in the state qualifying district meet today at Dubuque Hempstead against incredibly fast competition. Vinton-Shellsburg Union was the smallest district by far in the field of Cedar Falls, Cedar Rapids Kennedy, Decorah, Dubuque Hempstead, Dubuque Walhert, Dubuque Senior, and Waterloo East/West.The girls showed they were ready right out of the gate.

Vikette Swimmers Sink Williamsburg on Senior Night, 68-26

Vikettes celebrate Senior night with a Victory over Williamsburg VSU Girls swimming had a solid victory for their 2nd and final home meet Thursday 10/22. They beat Williamsburg 68 - 26 in the final team standings. The home team took 1st place in all but 1 event, and took 1st and 2nd 6 of the 11 events. The girls swam some very good times, I'm very happy with the way they performed. And doing it for a home crowd was a great way to end our regular season.

VSU Swimming Conferences

Clarissa Carolan swam 4 events resulting in 2 individual and 2 relay best times. VSU swam their modified North Central Iowa Swim Conference meet on Saturday. Instead of having all teams swim at one location, the teams were split into two locations to allow for more social distancing. VSU swam with Williamsburg and Oskaloosa at Williamsburg, while Grinnell, Boone and Decorah swam at Decorah. The girls swam very well all morning.
