Beyer signs to play football at Waldorf

With the stroke of pen Wednesday, Luke Beyer transitioned from a Viking to a Warrior. Beyer, a 5-9, 195-pound senior hard-hitting linebacker for the last two seasons for the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings, signed his national letter of intent to play college ball at Waldorf University, flanked by his parents, Gary and Bonnie Beyer of rural Vinton. The decision to go to at the Forest City-based school came after visits to eight or nine other Iowa schools.

Last-second drama puts Ortner in the consolation semis!

Brady Ortner scored a last-second reversal and near-fall to defeat Harlan's Ethan Lemon, 14-13 to advance to Saturday's 126-pound consolation semifinals. Ortner (44-7) led Lemon 10-9 with 30 seconds to go when the Cyclone got a takedown and turned him for a two-point near-fall. But with nine seconds left, Ortner managed to get out from underneath and scored the reversal and back points to score the 14-13 win.

Ortner advances, clinches medal with dramatic win

Vinton-Shellsburg's Brady Ortner has defeated freshman Ethan DeLeon of Sioux City Heelan, 1-0 in the second round of the Class 2A consolation bracket.With the victory Ortner (43-7) advances to tonight's consolation 3rd round against Ethan Lemon of Harlan (37-10 of and most importantly he has wrapped-up at least 8th-place in the tournament and a spot in on the medal podium Saturday night.

Ortner advances with a fall, will wrestle in Friday's 2nd round

Viking sophomore Brady Ortner pinned Jack Ites of Iowa Falls-Alden in Thursday's first round of consolations to advance to Friday's second-round. Ortner pinned Ites in 1:57 of the first period. He will wrestle the loser of the quarterfinal match between Ethan DeLeon of Sioux City Heelan and Joe Sullivan of Osage. See photos here!

Ortner falls 3-2 in State opener, consolations shortly

Vinton-Shellsburg wrestler Brady Ortner dropped a heartbreaking 3-2 decision to Brock Beck of Grinnell (ranked No. 2 in the State at 126) in the first round of the State tournament this afternoon in Des Moines. Brady (41-7) will be in action again shortly in the consolation round, facing Jack Ites of Iowa Falls-Alden as he looks to stay alive in the tourney.

Promoter’s post is latest Benton County Speedway first for Dripps

The track where Corey Dripps started his racing career nearly 30 years ago is the same track he’ll promote in 2020.Dripps and his father Rick, partners in Specialty Racing Promotions Inc., will be in charge for their first full season at Benton County Speedway. They’d promoted a single event, the season-ending Arnold Motor Supply Dirt Knights Tour show, at Vinton, the traditional home track of the IMCA Modified division, last September.

Left to Right: Holden Sevening, Hunter Williams, Dylan Hullaby, Cameron Walker, and Hayden Rast This Saturday night, February 22, the Cedar Rapids High School RoughRiders hockey team will hold its annual Senior Night celebration. The ceremony recognizing the seniors of the graduating high school class of 2020 will begin immediately following the conclusion of the junior varsity game, which begins at 5:00pm. The varsity game will begin at 7pm.

Vikings hold off Hawk rally, 60-56

Coach Joe Johnson's Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings held off a late rally to post a 60-56 WaMaC road victory Friday night at West Delaware.Paced by double figure scoring from Sam Griffith, Jose Wilson and David Lapan-Islas, the Vikings (8-11 on the year) pulled out to a 38-29 lead at the half, only to have the Hawks cut the margin to two at 48-46 going into the fourth quarter.
