Vikings stop Spartans in a thriller, 58-56

VINTON — A slow start led to a big finish Friday night for the Vinton-Shellsburg boys’ basketball team, as Coach Joe Johnson's Vikings fought off the Solon Spartans for a 58-56 WaMaC Conference victory at the Garrison Fieldhouse. The Vikes (2-1, 1-1 in conference play), trailed 11-5 after one period and were still down one at halftime, 17-16, but once they came back from the half, Asgaard smote Sparta.

Radeke, King win mat titles at Monticello

Bryce Radeke 138-pound champion Coach Brian Sheston’s Vinton-Shellsburg wrestlers got off the 2019-20 season to a fast start over the weekend with a pair of solid performances, highlighted by Saturday’s showing at the Monticello’s Guilford Invitational The Vikings crowned a pair of champs, two runner-up finishes and three thirds on the way to a fourth-place finish in the meet.

Vikettes roll in cage opener, 46-30

Vikings blast Knights, 57-38

VINTON — CJ Rickels's 22 points coupled with a tenacious defense by the home team led the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings to a 57-38 victory over the Union Knights Thursday night in the Garrison Fieldhouse.Coach Joe Johnson’s Vikings (1-1) led 17-8 after one period, then blew the game open in the second quarter to take a 34-15 into the locker room at the half.

Howes-Vonstein, Sutton pace Vikettes past Union, 41-28

VINTON — The Vinton-Shellsburg Vikettes blew open a tight game in the first half to pull away and down Union, 41-28 in a non-conference battle Thursday night at the Garrison Fieldhouse.The Vikettes (2-1 overall) were only up 6-5 after one period and 13-12 at intermission, but from then it was not the Knights’ night. Lucy Howes-Vonstein drilled home 17 points and Taryn Sutton added 11 more to pace the Vikettes.

4 teams competed on Tuesday at Cadillac Lanes and were victorious on all levels

Vikes drop opener at Maquoketa, 62-51

MAQUOKETA — A cold night of shooting is never good in basketball, but it’s even worse when your opponent is hot.Coach Joe Johnson’s Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings dropped their season opener Tuesday, falling 62-51 to Maquoketa on the (long) road. The Vikings led the game most of the first half and took a 28-24 lead into the locker room at intermission.

Vikette comeback falls short, 54-47

VINTON -- There really is no such thing in sports as a moral victory, but in a lot of ways this loss might have been as close as you can get.The short-handed Vinton-Shellsburg Vikettes (1-1) charged back from a deep hole late in the fourth quarter, only to have the Maquoketa Cardinals manage to hold them off for a 54-47 WaMaC Conference win Tuesday night at the Garrison Fieldhouse.

Vinton will be on the list of destinations for the first Iowa's Ride If you would like to be part of the competing bike ride to the RAGBRAI called “Iowa's Ride” you can register to participate at the following link: https://iowasride.com/registration/Iowa's ride will be taking off from Dubuque on Sunday, July 12, for a 48 mile trip to Monticello. After leaving Monticello, the ride will go another 50 miles to the stop in Vinton on Monday, July 13.
