Auditor encourages voters to request absentee ballots for Primary Election

Benton County Auditor and Commissioner of Elections Hayley Rippel is encouraging those wishing to vote in the June 2 Primary Election to vote absentee by mail due to the recent concerns with coronavirus and COVID-19.We are working with the Secretary of State’s office and public health officials to ensure the safety of our voters and election workers.

Vinton Shellsburg Closes School on Monday, March 15

Following the Governor's announcement today, Vinton-Shellsburg will be closing schools tomorrow."Based on Governor Reynold's recommendation, school will be closed tomorrow. Benton County Democratic Convention Postponed

Rosemary Schwartz, Chair of the Benton County Democratic Central Committee has announced that the March 21 County Convention has been postponed due to the Covid 19 pandemic sweeping the country.As soon as decisions are made on how to proceed, Chair Schwartz will inform the delegates and alternates elected at the caucuses on Feb. 3rd on the plan.In addition, the March 17th Democratic Central Committee has been canceled.

COVID-19 community spread confirmed in Iowa

The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) has been notified of one additional positive case of an Iowan with COVID-19, for a total of 18 positive cases. The individual is an older adult age 61-80, and a resident of Dallas County. Additionally, IDPH has determined, based on the new COVID-19 case and the announcement this evening of community spread in Omaha, Neb.

While we continue to work on bills and put the budget together, we are also monitoring COVID-19.At the time of this article most of the cases are isolated to Johnson County and were all older adults (61-80 years) and were on the same Egyptian cruise. Another case in Pottawattamie County is a middle aged adult (41-60 years) and had recently traveled to California.

Recap of March 9 School Board meeting

The board met in regular session on Monday, March 9, 2020 in the board room at Central Office. All members answered roll call with the exception of Mike Timmermans. All administrators were present including Business Manager Barkdoll.Under Receive Visitors/Public Comments, Melissa Schwan requested the board approve a use of facilities during the Iowa Bike Ride in July.

Andrew Elwick Sworn in as New Council Member for 2nd Precinct

City Clerk Cindy Michael swears in Andrew Elwick to fill the 2nd Precinct Councilman position At Thursday night's City Council meeting Cindy Michael, the City Clerk, swore in the newest member to the city council. Carrying on the family tradition of service, Andrew Elwick was sworn in as the 2nd Precinct's councilman. Filling the seat vacated after his father, Ron's retirement following his last term, Andrew will finish out the remainder of the new term which was filled through a special election.

iVinton to include Free Fiber to each home that signs up for a Site Survey

The iVinton project is getting ready to gear up again with contractors bringing in several crews to finish building the fiber network. Residents are encouraged to contact the iVinton office if you haven't yet had crews to your home to run the conduit (the tube that holds the fiber) to your house. There is NO charge for this...or now for the fiber to be connected to your home.
