Olivia Spencer, the daughter of Steve and Kendra Spencer, is joining her parents in planning to participate in the Aug. 1 Heart Walk in Cedar Rapids
"We are always advocates for this due to their continued research. Without continued research there would be no hope for many of the children born with congenital heart disease," says Kendra.

The pass-through towns of the 2015 RAGBRAI route have been announced, and along with Vinton, Mount Auburn and Shellsburg will welcome the thousands of cyclists who pedal across the state.
On the RAGBRAI web site route listing, Day 5 includes the following:

Rise and shine with the cows, kangaroos and wallabies at Hansen’s Farm Fresh Dairy on the edge of Hudson.

New rodeo stars will be born during the wild and crazy “Dairyland Donkey Basketball Show” at the Vinton-Shellsburg Middle School on March 24, 2015, starting at 7:00pm. It’s basketball played on real, live donkeys, and it will be wilder than a rodeo and funnier than a circus! All local players will be riding. The six teams will be Vinton Unlimited, Betterton Chiropractic, V-S Juniors, V-S Seniors, V-S Teachers, and a mystery team.

Although the farmers have yet to plant their corn in the fields surrounding Vinton, full ears have appeared in our city. The 20 fiberglass structures, about seven feet high, arrived on a flatbed trailer Friday afternoon. The members of the Vinton Guild of Fine Arts found sponsors for the 20 structures, which will adorn businesses and other facilities in a variety of colors and themes.

Continuing a five-year tradition, the Vinton-Shellsburg girls basketball team gathered Wednesday afternoon, in pink shirts, to celebrate the success of their 2015 Pink Night. The players and coaches presented a check for $525 to VGH Foundation Director Mike Timmermans and VGH Imaging Services Director Monica Stark. The funds will help pay for breast care services for women who cannot afford them via the VGH Gifts of Hope fund.

Barb Campbell and Rick Poldberg, from the Vinton Guild of Fine Arts, accept a check from US Bank Market President, Jon Kremer. Proceeds will be used for the “Ears of Corn” project. The Guild of Fine Arts is already in the process of making 20 - 7 Ft. tall ears of corn to be placed around the community.
Vinton Guild of Fine Arts has several projects in the works for 2015, including their “Arts in the Park Festival” in June.

Several Vinton-Shellsburg teachers, including sisters Alexa Francois at VS Middle School and Stephanie Francois-Miller at Tilford, wore blue or grey t-shirts on Wednesday with the message: Spread the word to end the word.
March 4 is the date of the national effort to help Americans remember to speak more respectfully to one another. Many organizations also mark Disability Awareness Week during March.

On Tuesday, March 3, 2015 at 6:22 a.m. the sheriff’s office responded to a two car accident in the 6600 block of 24th Ave. (Highway 218). Steven R. Isbell, age: 44 from Garrison was driving a 2014 Chevrolet Impala southbound when Orlando Mauldin, age: 49 of Vinton driving a 2003 Dodge Stratus northbound lost control on the icy road crossing into the southbound lane colliding with the Isbell vehicle head-on.

The women of Ruth Circle at Wesley United Methodist Church have been involved in making tactile blankets for babies who are blind or visually impaired. For these children, their hands are their eyes. The blankets are made of recycled material that was donated by church members and friends. Each patchwork square has a different texture for the children to explore, such as corduroy, fleece, denim, satin or velvet.
