City of Shellsburg Minutes 6/21/22

6-21-22 a meeting of the Shellsburg City Council was called to order by Mayor Speckner at 6:00 pm in the Council Chambers. Roll call was answered by Travis, Vogt, Reeves, Harvey, and Thorkildson. Harvey motioned to approve the consent agenda, second by Vogt. All ayes. Public Forum: resident requested parking a camper in town for 3-4 months until permanent location ready.

Vinton Public Library to be Closed the Week of July 11

The library board was recently notified of the resignation of Interim Director Colton Neely. Colton’s last day will be July 8th. As a result of this resignation and the lack of a full-time staff member, the board has made the decision to close the library for the week of July 11th. During this week no programming will occur and the board will look at options for opening the library for limited hours and services for the period of time until a new Library Director is able to be hired.

Garrett Wayne Spence of Vinton Charged with Sexual Abuse

It started with a call from Brandon on Tuesday morning at about 12:30 a.m. from Garrett Wayne Spence, 32. Spence had called to report that he was in a wooded area east of Brandon where he had gone to fish, but had gotten lost when it got dark outside. He told police that his phone battery was low, but that he had started a fire. The Buchanan County Sheriff's Department responded to the Koutney Pond in the Hoffman Woods area along I-380.

Gov. Reynolds and legislative leaders announce legal action to protect life

Today, Gov. Reynolds and legislative leaders announced two legal actions following the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs: Gov. Reynolds will urge the Iowa Supreme Court to rehear Planned Parenthood v. Reynolds (known as PPH IV), in light of the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs.  Gov. Reynolds will request that the Iowa courts lift the injunction against enforcement of Iowa’s fetal heartbeat law.

Libertarian Candidate arrested in Washington D.C.

In January the Libertarian Party of Iowa endorsed Rick Stewart, of Cedar Rapids, as their candidate for Governor. He is running alongside Marco Battaglia, of Des Moines, as his running mate.Stewart founded Frontier Natural Products Co-op in Norway, Iowa but has since retired.In Stewart's announcement in part he said:"I'm running for Iowa Governor because it is time for a governor for all Iowans and not just for members of a particular political party.
