Iowa’s application for Lost Wages Assistance funds approved by FEMA
Gov. Kim Reynolds announced that the United States Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA) has approved Iowa’s application to participate in the Lost Wages Assistance program. The program provides eligible claimants who are receiving unemployment with additional benefits, starting the week ending August 1, 2020. The additional weekly payments were authorized by President Trump on Aug.
Individual Disaster Assistance Grant Program Applications Available
Benton County residents impacted by the August 10th storm can apply for the Iowa Individual Assistance Grant Program. The grants are for families whose household’s annual income is at 200% or less of the federal poverty level. Each qualifying household MAY receive up to $5,000.00. In Benton County applications are available at HACAP service locations in: Vinton – 202 East 4th Street between the hours of 9:00 am to 3:00 pm Monday through Friday.

Absentee ballot, condition of the county and losses due to the storm
Hayley Rippel, Benton County Auditor mentioned in the Supervisor's meeting on Tuesday that she's received around 600 absentee ballot requests in just Monday's mail alone. Among other discussions held Tax Assessor, Larry Andreesen discussed with the Supervisors the damage caused throughout the county and the process that will go into figuring the damage and tax revenue.
Governor Kim Reynolds Includes Benton County in Disaster Proclamation
Gov. Kim Reynolds has issued a disaster proclamation in response to a severe weather system that moved across Iowa and caused widespread damage August 10. The proclamation allows state resources to be utilized to respond to and recover from the effects of this severe weather in Benton, Cedar, Clarke, Greene, Hardin, Iowa, Jasper, Linn, Muscatine, Polk, Poweshiek, Scott, Tama, and Washington counties.
Benton County Emergency Declaration by County Supervisors
Benton County Supervisors at Tuesday's meeting made an emergency declaration for Benton County. "Benton County has suffered from a severe straight-line windstorm, which occurred on Monday, August 10, 2020, causing severe damage to public and private property, disruption of utility service and endangerment of health and safety of the citizens of Benton County within the disaster area.
Food Safety When the Power is Out
It may be days for many families to get electricity back. While generators can provide temporary power until electricity is restored it is important to follow food safety guidelines.According to the Centers for Disease Control, refrigerated or frozen foods may not be safe to eat after the loss of power. The refrigerator should be at 40 degrees F or below for food to be safe.
