Area departments respond to fire at Kerry facility in Vinton

Firefighters from Vinton, Garrison and Urbana were sent to the Kerry facility on West First Street in Vinton to battle a fire on Wednesday night. Vinton firemen used their aerial ladder to access the roof, which they cut before spraying with the aerial nozzle.  Vinton Fire Chief Gary McKenna estimated the damage at several hundred thousand dollars.

Dawn Richards is BC Farm Bureau Cookout Champ

The 8th Annual Benton County Farm Bureau Cookout Contest was held Saturday July 25 at the fairgrounds in Vinton during the Benton County Fair.  Ten people competed for Grand Champion of the event, with Dawn Richards winning the title with her Flat Iron Steak recipe in the Beef category. Bill Newton, contest coordinator, was on hand to run the event, along with Teddi Newton, Al Schafbuch and Robert Ritscher to assist with the Farm Bureau sponsored Cookout.

FFA shares another successful week at the Benton County Fair

On Wednesday, June 22nd 2015, the Benton County Fair started with animals being brought in between the times of 3 pm and 8 pm, but that isn’t when the Vinton-Shellsburg FFA Chapter started the fair. The Vinton-Shellsburg FFA Chapter started working for fair early in the summer, planning out everything that they can do to make the FFA Barn even better than the previous year.

Portion of Old Creamery Nature Trail to close for bridge maintenance

Public Notice for immediate release:  A portion of the “Old Creamery Nature Trail” (Between 60th Street & 13th Avenue near Urmy Cemetery) will be closed starting the afternoon of July 28th, 2015 and ending upon the completion of bridge maintenance later in the week.   Another notice will be issued when the area is cleared for recreational usage.

First rabbit ribbon auction at Fair a success

Many 4-H kids were very excited on Sunday afternoon as the first ever Rabbit Ribbon Auction was held.  There were 19 participants in the auction.  The Committee would like to thank the following businesses and family members for their participation: Lewis Bottom Farms, Fareway, Keystone Savings Bank, P & L Drywall, Stamp Ag, Teddi Newton, Tim Schanbacher, Allstate Insurance- David Redlinger, Mary Clark, Wilson-Hite Insurance, Larry Radeke, Angie Smith, Interstate Grain, Coots Material and US Bank.

Lions Club Program....Housing In Vinton

Melissa Schwan, VU Director, and Emily Upah, Director of Benton Development Group. “You can’t stand still in a parade”, might be the best way to describe the program at the weekly meeting of Vinton Lions Club last Wednesday.  Emily Upah, Benton Development Director, Melissa Schwan, Vinton Unlimited Director, and Marlyn Jorgenson who has been very involved as a volunteer in Benton Development, spoke on efforts to improve housing for Vinton.

School Supplies available for those in need

Several community organizations including Clickstop, local churches, Monkeytown, and the Vinton-Shellsburg Community School District have pooled resources to provide school supplies to students whose families are experiencing financial hardship for the upcoming school year.  Clickstop Cares also has clothing and limited furniture available.

RAGBRAI: Riders bring unique stories

For many of the RAGBRAI riders who passed through Vinton, Mount Auburn and Shellsburg last Thursday, the annual bicycle ride across Iowa is an opportunity for them to raise awareness about an issue that is important to them. For others, it’s a chance to ride in tribute of someone facing an illness, or a memorial to someone who has recently died.

Overalls became Schoonover's final contribution to Vinton community

Richard Schoonover donated this large overalls to RAGBRAI two days before his death. When RAGBRAI riders passing through Vinton on Thursday stopped for photos in front of the Benton County Courthouse, they were unknowingly paying tribute to Richard Schoonover's final contribution to his community.  Schoonie, as he was known to his long-time friends, died on July 20, two days after donating his over-sized bib overalls to the RAGBRAI committee, which used them as a photo prop.
