More about the services of the Cedar Valley Humane Society

The Cedar Valley Humane Society provides a variety of services for pets in Eastern Iowa area. Our primary goal is to find homes for lost and abandoned animals, but we also support other programs, initiatives and resources to help strengthen the relationship between people and their pets, such as humane education, volunteer opportunities, pet assisted therapy, pet microchip, refuge for stray and unwanted animals, pet adoption service, animal control services, end of life services, pet cremation and burial, and dog obedience training.

Post 218 AMVET of the Year: Brian Robinson

The Post 218 AMVETS named Brian Robinson as their member of the year. The Vinton Amvets Post 218 has awarded its Amvet of the Year Award to Brian Robinson. The award is given for outstanding dedication and service. Brian is the Editor and Publisher of the Amvets monthly newletter. He has done an amazing job. His outstanding work on the newsletter has won an award from the Amvets National Headquarters. In between his newsletter compilations, he works part-time with a Veteran’s Crisis Help line, and comes out to join us for pretty close to every event we have.

Final call for volunteers for river clean-up Saturday

Just a reminder, your Cedar River R.A.T.S. will be gathering at the Vinton Park’s Boat Ramp this Saturday, August 8th at 9:00 A.M. to start their 8th Annual River Clean Up. (Shirts will be provided to the first 40 volunteers.) The route will go from the Park’s ramp to Benton City, where lunch will be provided, and then finish up at WildCat Park.

Foundation 2 presents at Vinton Lions Club

Jesica Copley and Drew Martel of Foundation 2 Vinton Lions Club program on Wednesday was a presentation by two staff members from Foundation 2, a crisis intervention service funded by the State of Iowa and various federal grants.  Foundation 2 provides services free of charge to individuals experiencing mental or emotional crisis that without crisis counseling, could lead to intervention by law enforcement, emergency room hospitalization, or suicide.

Courthouse clock will soon keep time for first time since 2009

A worker installs the first of four sets of clock hands at the courthouse. Although it “seems like forever to some people” since the Benton Courthouse clock told passers-by the correct time, it’s only been a little more than six years since the electric motor that powered the century-old mechanisms stopped working. Rick Bramow, who has worked in the courthouse maintenance department since graduating from Washington high school in 1973, has a box of parts in his office.

In Memory of Emma, on her 15th birthday

Friends and family members released dozens of lanterns in honor of Emma Redlinger's 15th birthday. Dozens of lanterns, many smiles and more than a few tears filled Celebration Park at dusk Tuesday night as the friends and family of Emma Redlinger celebrated what would have been her 15th birthday.  Cupcakes with two of Emma's favorite color schemes, blue and rainbow, filled a table next to photos of Emma doing her favorite things. Many wore their black t-shirts with the smiling cat from "Alice in Wonderland," one of Emma's favorite characters.

New era for VS sports: Vikings begin camp on artificial turf

Football players became the first VS athletes to practice on the new artificial turf. The padlock came off the gate yesterday, as Vinton-Shellsburg administrators and coaches inspected the now-finished field turf and track, and the football players became the first VS athletes to practice on the new surface. Football camp began yesterday, with coaches guiding the players through their offensive and defensive schemes, while parents and other volunteers helped finish re-painting the black railings that surround the home bleachers.
