Committee of 20 to begin work on Vinton Comprehensive Plan

       Twenty Vinton area leaders will spend the next several months working on a plan that will affect the changes in Vinton for years to come.       The plan will take into account the city’s needs in the areas of industry, retail, education, housing and infrastructure. It will also prioritize projects and list a target date for completing specific items.

AmeriCorps spotlight: Carrie-Ann MacArthur

Carrie-Ann MacArthur is one of the AmeriCorps team leaders for Class 17. Members arrive today.   Today’s NCCC spotlight is Carrie-Ann MacArthur who hails from Eljay, GA.  Leading Oak 6 this year, Carrie-Ann is a recent graduate of Southern Polytechnic State University in Marietta, GA.  She graduated in December of 2010 with a degree in Industrial and Organizational Psychology and a minor in Business management.  Carrie-Ann loves helping others and giving back.

Cuts likely as state leaders continue discussion of Iowa Braille School

       In her “In the Statehouse” column today, Iowa House District 39 Rep. Dawn Pettengill shared the following information:      In Government Oversight, the Iowa Braille and Sight Saving School presented the results of the Residential Study Committee and after hearing in January they had begun implementing the recommendations of the committee without the Legislature's approval.

Kapucian, Pettengill to hold legislatives coffees in Vinton, Norway Saturday

       Iowa State Sen. Tim Kapucian (Senate District 20) and State Rep. Dawn Pettengil (House District 19) will continue their legislative coffee meetings this weekend. They will be in Vinton, meeting with constituents at 10 a.m.Saturday, Feb. 19, at Vinton City Hall. Then they will meet residents at the Norway Public Library at 1:30 p.

School Board to open contract negotiations with VSEA

     The Vinton-Shellsburg Board of Education will hold a special meeting at 4 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 17, in its meeting room. The only item on the agenda is the initial proposal from the Vinton-Shellsburg Education Association. The VSEA will present its initial proposal for contract and settlement conditions for the 2011-2012 school year.

Former Vinton Popcorn plant may be demolished; city council ponders flood buyout

The Vinton Popcorn facility created products known throughout the U.S. for decades.        A writer in New Yorker used two words when writing about the annual National Fancy Food and Confection Show in the 1970s.      A Chicago Sun Times writer used those two words when discussing agriculture prices and how they impact the foods people buy in 1988.     And in the 1960s, the Cedar Rapids Corvette Club used those two words as part of its history of events.

Viking basketball Pink Night raises nets nearly $2,500 to fight breast cancer

Darrell Cannon accepts bids during the Pink Night auction.      Vinton-Shellsburg basketbal fans and parents bid on a pink basketball and the black and pink warm-up jerseys worn by the Vikings during their Pink Night game vs. Solon Friday in Vinton.       The auction at halftime raised almost $2,500 (after expenses) which will go to Virginia Gay Hospital for its breast cancer treatment and diagnosis efforts.

2010 Census: Vinton, Benton County see 3 percent population growth

      Both the City of Vinton and Benton County increased in population by just over 3 percent from 2000 to 2010, according to the U.S. Census.      The official 2010 population of Benton County is 26,076, an increase of 768 from the 2000 count of 25,308.     Vinton’s population grew by 155, from 5,102 to 5,257, a 3 percent increase.

Jeff Schadle honored for five years of service

Arborist Jeff Schadle was honored for 5 years of service.    For five years now, Jeff Schadle has been serving the City of Vinton. The arborists has helped the city and its citizens with tree planting and related services designed to improve the beauty of Vinton. Jeff recieved his five-year certificate from Vinton Mayor John Watson during the city council meeting Thursday evening. 

Treasurer Fitzgerald Helps Schools Prepare for Kindergarten Round-Up

   State Treasurer Michael L. Fitzgerald is providing free pencils to Kindergarten teachers across Iowa through the Prepare for Basics Program. Fitzgerald understands that Kindergarten Round-Up is an integral part for both children and parents which is why he is providing the materials free of charge. "Our schools have the right idea when it comes to putting the children and parents at ease," Fitzgerald said.
