Honor Flights bringing communities together, changing way Americans see DC

Vinton vets Jay Bolin, Milton Smith, Burt Davis & Jim Peterson with guardians at Iwo Jima memorial.         It started when a guy with a pilot's license decided to fly a couple of friends to see the World War II memorial in Washington, D.C.      Now, the Honor Flight movement is bringing communities together all over the country, and changing the way countless Americans see the memorials of Washington, D.

Water Repairs on C Ave to be completed by tomorrow

  Due to the rain, water main repairs on C Avenue at Casey’s will be done tomorrow, April 27.   It will be mostly, if not completely done by noon.  

Vinton Community Foundation Accepting Grant Applications

  Organizations encouraged to apply for funds for local projects The Vinton Community Foundation board members announced today they will be accepting grant applications for the 2011 grant program for tax exempt, non-profit, service oriented groups in Vinton.  Application forms are available at Farmers Savings Bank & Trust, 401 B Avenue, Vinton or from foundation board members.

Guitarist Hammond to perform in Vinton Friday evening

Guitarist Bill Hammond will return to Vinton for a free performance Friday. [VIDEO]   Bill Hammond, a professional level acoustic guitarist, will be entertaining guests and visitors in the Lounge of the Cobblestone Inn from 7-9 p.m. this Friday, April 29.             Hammond, an editor for the Star Tribune in Minneapolis,has played at the Idiot Jam in Vinton each September for the past seven years.

Easter Egg hunts fill Riverside, Rodgers park

The hunt begins at Riverside Park, sponsored by the Kiwanis Club.      Riverside Park in Vinton and Rodgers Park northeast of Vinton were briefly filled with hundreds of people for the annual Easter Egg Hunt events.      The Vinton Kiwanis Club (and Windsor Manor residents) filled hundreds of eggs and club members placed them at Riverside Park for the event the club has been sponsoring annually for a half century or more on Saturay morning.

What you missed Friday morning in the Farmers Sales coffee conversation

Dell Hanson regularly meets with several area residents, including Marge Mick.      The phone on the wall, behind the couch, rings once.      Dell Hanson reaches up to answer it.      "Famers Sales," he says.      Pause.      "I will be in and out," he says.      Another pause, as the customer (apparently) discusses what he needs, and the equipment problem he is trying to solve.

Washington awaits Iowa's veterans; Honor Flight leaves for DC on Tuesday

Navy veteran James Peterson of Vinton served on the destroyer USS Maddox.      Handshakes, hugs, applause and "Thank yous" await Vinton veterans Burton Davis, James Peterson, Milton Smith, Jay Bolin and scores of other World War II veterans from Eastern Iowa when they arrive in Washington, D.C. tomorrow.      The four are among 90 or more veterans who will leave at 7 a.m. for the Eastern Iowa Honor Flight.

Easter Sunday: Area churches celebrate culmination of Holy Week

The Last Supper: This trailer has been on display throughout Holy Week near The Lion & The Lamb.      Easter Sunday brought the traditional culmination of Holy Week services in Vinton, as churches celebrated the resurrection of Christ. There have been church and ecumenical services throughout the week, and this trailer depicting the Last Supper has been on display near The Lion & The Lamb on Second Avenue. 

Flood impact: Farmers Sales to close in Vinton

These people gather at Farmers Sales each morning; the business will be torn down this year..     The people who gather with Dell Hanson at Farmers Sales & Service on 4th Street in Vinton will have to find a new meeting place for their morning coffee and conversation this summer.     Hanson has agreed to a flood buyout deal with the city through the FEMA Hazard Mitigation Program. His business was damaged when the Flood of 2008 caused Hinkle Creek in Vinton to rise.
