ACT 1 offers workshop for directors

       ACT I of Benton County is pleased to announce that it will offer a Directors’ Workshop this summer for those interested in directing future productions as well as those simply interested in better understanding the directing process.  The workshop will consist of approximately 16 hours of class time in which participants will learn the fundamentals of blocking, character development, production concept, casting, production planning, design, technical elements, and organizing a production for performance, and complete class projects on various topics.

Grassley answers questions from VSHS students

VSHS teachers Kelly Steffen and Kyle Engdahl with Sen. Charles Grassley.       The Vike of the Week won't use the parking space at Vinton-Shellsburg High School this week.     That's because he works in Washington, D.C.and has not been a student in high school for 60 years.      Sen. Charles Grassley received the honorary "Vike of the Week" T-shirt after speaking to approximately 60 students in the choir room on Monday morning.

Water Repairs rescheduled

  The water leak repairs have been rescheduled due to forecasted rain for tomorrow.   The repair on West 4th Street will be on Wednesday, April 20. This will likely not involve interruptions to traffic.   The repair on C Avenue with flaggers on the street will be Tuesday, April 26 in the morning. Please contact Vinton City Hall for more information.

Grand Opening today: KT's Kloset owners offer affordable used clothing

Kathy Hulse and Tim Westemeier are the owners of KT's Kloset, Vinton's new used clothing store.      After retiring from their first jobs, Tim Westemeier and Kathy Hulse decided to pursue their second interest: Opening a used clothing store. They looked at several Iowa communities before choosing Vinton.      Now, their store, KT's Kloset, is open across the street from the Palace Theatre. Their Grand Opening takes place today, with refreshments and 20 percent discounts.

Weather cancels Special Olympics event

Saturday began with a light layer of snow.    Today's Special Olympics track event at Coe College in Cedar Rapids was cancelled because of the weather.       It was not the snow that caused the event to be called off. Although the snow and rain did make travel difficult; two vehicles ended up in the ditch along I-380 north of Cedar Rapids Saturday morning.

Thanks for helping VSHS Jazz Band have successful season

     Thank you to all of the band booster parents, Vinton-Shellsburg school administration, staff, students, and community businesses for your continued support of the band department and its students.  The community, school, and band parent support has been instrumental in the continued success of the band program.       We just finished another very successful jazz band season, and we want to personally thank everyone in the community for their support this season.

Honor Flight

Deb Rundlett (guardian) and James Peterson will participate in the April 26 Honor Flight.      Several Vinton area World War II veterans attended the orientation for the April 26 Eastern Iowa Honor Flight.      The trip to Washington, D.C., to see the World War II Memorial and other military landmarks is provided free of charge to World War II veterans to honor them for their service.     Vinton veterans going on this flight include: Burt Davis, William "Jay" Bolin, Jim Peterson and Milton Smith.

Leaders at Kirkwood Community College recognize their role in preparing a generation of citizen workers to be ready for current jobs—and those that haven’t been created yet. To do that will require classrooms, labs, tools—and the funds to make it happen.

Meghan Owens, Emily Miller win Best of Show honors at WaMaC Art Fair

Emily Miller: Best of Show, 2D        Meghan Owens used for her inspiration a famous, 425-year-old painting.      Emily Miller used a mirror.      Meghan used clay to make a 3D image of The Birth of Venus.      Emily used a variety of colors to make a 2D self-portrait.      Both came home from the WaMaC art show with the same honor: Best of Show.

Son of former principal doing 'remarkably well' after IED blast in Afghanistan

Sgt. Eric Lindsey, injured in Afghanistan        When Eron and Eric Lindsey's mother, Donna, was the principal of the West Early Childhood Center, both soldiers attended Veterans Day events to speak to the elementary students about serving as U.S. soldiers in the Middle East.      One of the 40-year-old Lindsey twins, Eric, was injured Monday in Afghanistan, where both are serving with the Iowa National Guard 133rd Infantry.
