Letter to the Editor: Digestive gases
Editor:This morning I listened to KXEL radio, each Saturday morning they have a program, “the Car Doctor.” I got in on the last part of one segment. They were discussing Global Warming or if you wish “the Green New Deal”. Some research has determined that Cattle with their unique digestive system (they are ruminants) emit more greenhouse gases than all of hydrocarbon transportation.
Letter to the Editor: Upcoming increase in sewer & water rates
The City of Vinton is about to vote on and approve a roughly 200% increase in water and sewer rates. The average home (family of four) is currently paying around $80 per month, this is going to increase to $220.Below is what I think are the facts behind the change. I’ll admit that I am unaware of most City of Vinton dealings. I am only going off of information as I understood it from watching one meeting on YouTube and looking at past meeting minutes.
When I was a kid...
...I did NOT have to walk both ways up a hill to get to school and back home. I was however expected to drive through 16" of snow to get back to college. Back in the day I went to a small Bible college in the southwest corner of Pennsylvania. The place rarely saw snow in the three and a half years that I was there. However, the rare times that it did snow, an inch or two, the place would be "campused.
Letter to the Editor: Where is the Democrat caucus?
Dear Editor,Iowa first in the Nation Status? We are a few days away from the Republican Caucus, but no Democrat one. Why did President Biden and the DNC give the Iowa status away to South Carolina?. A slap in the face to Iowa Democrats! Democrats should be mad as hell over this slight and I am all for them for I see this as an assault on the first Amendment.
Quotable quotes and other thoughts
Editor:A new year, a new hope for better governance! Quotable quotes and other thoughts "We sleep safe in our beds because rough men stand ready in the night to visit violence on those who would do us harm."George Orwell - From a BBC broadcast of April 4, 1942 “Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man’s character, give him power.
Fine I'll admit it, now get off my lawn!
It's official. I'm an "elderly woman." How do I know? Well, I know I'm a woman. And I know I'm old. And Amazon assumes that if you're looking for a dvd player, this puts me in the "elderly woman" category. I admit it. I like my dvds. Why? Well, for example, I wanted to watch "Die Hard," because hey, I love Bruce Willis and I love a good action movie.
Chocolate milk and Cheer
Proverbs 17:22 "A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones."Because of a series of events which include a cancer diagnosis in the extended family, I get to babysit one of my preschool granddaughters. To do so, this requires four hours in the car of retrieving and returning with the said granddaughter, so it's not a mere run across town and pick up the child, this is a commitment.
We Must Eradicate Antisemitism in the Wake of the Israel-Hamas War
Editor's note: I've been wanting to write on this topic, but I just haven't had the time to do so. Instead, I will share the thoughts of Callista Gingrich on the topic. ...October 14, 2023 By Ambassador Callista L. GingrichOn Oct. 7, Hamas waged a savage invasion of Israel, displaying a level of barbarism not seen in modern history. Having no regard for innocent life, Hamas targeted soldiers and civilians alike with the stated goal of destroying the Jewish people and the state of Israel.
If you want to be on the ballot, Don't win the Caucus
I have been pondering the Iowa Caucus this year and what it means. For candidates it makes them look like they are doing good in the polls. In a way. it gives the winners a little bit to brag about. For Iowa voters, it gives us a chance to be in the room with the person who will be the next president, that alone is pretty awesome. There is no other state that gets the attention that Iowa gets because of our first-in-the-nation status.
Some quit the race, while others are joining up
Back in the good ol' days I had the chance to babysit one of my granddaughters from the time she was a few months old until she was I think three. Part of the babysitting included overnights. The time for bedtime stories and the little ditties that you sing to kids when you've run out of things to say. One of those was the song, "There were 10 in the bed.
